Most weak AI answers don't need a better first prompt. They need one good follow-up. Find the problem below and paste the fix into the same chat. These work in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and most other assistants.

Before it answers

Use these when the task is important or the first result would depend on details you haven't given.

PROMPT / COPY-PASTE
Before you answer, ask me the three questions that would change your answer the most.

Here's an example of what good looks like: [paste]. Match its quality and structure, not its topic.

Tell me what's missing from my request before you start.

It's too generic

The answer could apply to anyone. Give the assistant your situation and ask it to cut the filler.

PROMPT / COPY-PASTE
Make this specific to [my role, audience or situation]. Remove anything that would be true for everyone.

Replace every general statement with a concrete example.

What would you tell someone in exactly my situation that you wouldn't tell a beginner?

It might be wrong

A confident tone doesn't mean a correct answer. Ask it to show where the weak spots are.

PROMPT / COPY-PASTE
Which parts of this are you least sure about, and why?

Separate what you know from what you're inferring or assuming.

Cite a source for each factual claim, or mark it as unverified.

Then check any number, date, quote or link you plan to reuse yourself.

It's too long or messy

PROMPT / COPY-PASTE
Cut this in half. Keep every number, name and decision.

Give me the answer in one sentence, then the three points that support it.

Turn this into a table I can scan in 30 seconds.

You need to decide something

PROMPT / COPY-PASTE
Give me two realistic options, the main trade-off of each, and which one you'd pick for my situation.

What would have to be true for the other option to be the better choice?

What's the cheapest way to test this before I commit?

The idea needs pushback

Assistants lean toward agreeing with you. Ask directly for the opposite.

PROMPT / COPY-PASTE
Argue against this as a skeptical [investor, customer, editor or engineer] would.

What's the most likely reason this fails in the first three months?

What am I not seeing because I want this to work?

You don't fully get it

PROMPT / COPY-PASTE
Explain this using an example from [a field or hobby I know well].

What do I need to understand first before this makes sense?

Explain it again in five sentences, then quiz me with two questions.

It doesn't sound like you

PROMPT / COPY-PASTE
Rewrite this in my voice. Here's a sample of my writing: [paste]. Keep the meaning, change the wording.

Remove filler, hype and any sentence that sounds like a template.

Read this back as my harshest editor and mark the three weakest lines.

Make them stick

A follow-up you use every week shouldn't be something you retype.

  • Put the habit in your instructions. Add a line like "Tell me when you're unsure or making an assumption" to your custom instructions in ChatGPT or your instructions for Claude.
  • Save favorites as text shortcuts. Your phone or computer's text replacement can expand something like ;;cut into the full prompt.
  • Turn a repeated sequence into a skill. If you always run the same three follow-ups on a draft, package them once. See ChatGPT, End to End or Claude, End to End.
